Uni York 1st XV vs Uni Leeds Development XXXV

University of York 1st XV  36  -  University of Leeds Development XV  0

A virtuoso display from young full-back Tom Bugge saw York to a win in the season opener. His pace and lines of running caused havoc amongst a much inferior backline with a brace of tries his reward.

The game, split into quarters, was always going to be a disjointed affair, but York didn’t allow this to affect them. Up-front the forwards showed characteristic power, battling a weak Leeds pack into submission. The front five worked especially hard, and the Leeds scrum was often seen hurtling backwards as the locks Callis and Forsythe put on the power in the row.

The first score of the day was a culmination of intense pressure on the Leeds’ line. After successive drives from Innes and Grant, the ball was moved wide and quick hands saw Bugge round his opposite man for an easy score. A second score for Tom Bugge, and a debut try from Des Pollen saw York take a commanding lead into the break.

At half-time, the entire Leeds team changed, but it did little to stop a now rampant York side. With the York forwards firmly in the ascendancy, the backs were afforded time and space. Ed Drewett was the welcome beneficiary. Two scything runs from Ryan Johnton and Gruffud Jones, were finished in some style by the speedy Drewett. A number of missed conversions from the boot of Tim Sparkleton, did little to dampen spirits as Alex Redshaw enjoyed a resounding victory in his first game as captain.
